North Shore Components Earns CTI CCAP-101 Certification for Counterfeit Avoidance

group_photoBellport, NY – North Shore Components, Inc, an independent and authorized franchised distributor of electronic components, has just earned CCAP-101 Certification from Components Technology Institute, Inc. (CTI).

The certification process started with counterfeit components avoidance training, which took place at North Shore Component’s brand new 10,000-sq.-ft. facility, and featured presentations by Leon Hamiter, a leading expert in component counterfeit detection and avoidance, assisted by Don Trenholm, President of Custom Analytical Services Inc., a third party test lab specializing in counterfeit component detection. The training program included discussions about the growing problem of component counterfeiting, experiences in authenticating good from bad components, and counterfeit detection methods, including the use of outside labs, data sources, and component descriptions to help authenticate components. In addition, Hamiter and Trenholm toured the facility and reviewed North Shore Components’ current in-house quality assurance and counterfeit component detection testing capabilities, which include:

  • In depth visual inspection of all incoming shipments
  • An advanced decapsulation (DCAP) laboratory to verify the authenticity of raw dies within component chips
  • Solderability testing for virtually all board-level components to determine whether strong electrical connections are being made during soldering
  • ESD S 20.20:2007-certified workstations (verified by KEMA) to protect sensitive electronic components against electro-static discharge (ESD)
  • X-Ray equipment to verify whether wire bonds are intact, the existence of chip dies, as well as the uniformity of chip die sizes by lot and date code
  • High power (1,000X) microscopic inspection to check for sanded and remarked surfaces, blacktopping, bruised component leads, and non-uniform plating
  • Resistance-to-solvent permanency marking tests to authenticate OEM markings, logos and date codes

According to Joseph Ruggerio, Vice President of North Shore Components, “We maintain a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards counterfeit components. With counterfeiters becoming increasingly sophisticated it has become a ‘cat and mouse’ game in which we need to continually reinvest to improve our counterfeit avoidance policies and procedures to stay ahead of deceitful practices. For this reason, we are proud to be associated with Leon Hamiter of CTI, who is one of the world’s leading experts in counterfeit component detection and avoidance. We are proud to be among the first in our industry to earn in CTI CCAP-101 certfication, which provides greater peace-of-mind for our customers who are looking to purchase certified products.”

A women-owned, minority-owned business, North Shore Components markets more than 40 different leading manufacturer lines, serving as an authorized franchised distributor for Alpha Wire, Belden, Littlefuse, Potter & Brumfield, SE Relays, and other leading brands. North Shore Components also provides comprehensive solutions involving obsolete and hard-to-find military and commercial components.
